Today we are presenting a video from our Wokabaut Senis video collection on YouTube. Wokabaut Senis is a participatory video project which complements our Bougainville Transition Dialogues (BTD). BTD Facilitators were trained in participatory video production and equipped with smartphones. They have been collecting stories from the villages on small-scale projects helping with nation-building and sustaining peace.
These stories were then edited and shared back to communities across all constituencies in Bougainville. They are another tool to promote reconciliation and shared understanding in Bougainville and to showcase that everyone in Bougainville is working for peaceful future. The films feature a variety of topics, including agriculture, climate change, reconciliations and mediations, tourism and ecotourism, economy and finance, education, health care, infrastructure, law and order, mining, social systems, traditional arts and crafts, and ex-combatants’ issues.
PaCSIA is proud to work together with Llane and Martin Munau from Voice in the Wilderness Productions. They are Bougainvillean filmmakers and participatory video experts who have provided training and edit and publish the videos. Llane explains the video of Angelina Kiha, the “Cabbage Lady”:
“Join us on a journey to Bitipui Village, South Nasioi Constituency in Bougainville, where we meet Angelina Kiha, a young mother who built her home from money she got from selling round cabbage. After completing Grade 10, Angelina couldn’t further her studies so she returned home to her village, and with the knowledge and skills she received from her Agriculture Teacher, she started her Cabbage Garden. A very inspiring story. Angelina tells us how her small-scale economic project supports nation-building and the road to independence in Bougainville. As part of the Wokabaut Senis project, we are showcasing stories and updates made by Bougainvilleans for Bougainvilleans.”
Please note that Angelina passed away in 2023. Her family has given us permission to share her story and it lives on to inspire more young Bougainvillean entrepreneurs and peacebuilders. Thank you Angelina.
